Cyber Security Tips for Small Business

In today’s digital landscape, small businesses are increasingly targeted by hackers. You might think cyber security is only for large corporations, but the reality is you and everybody else are a prime target. The good news? Protecting your business doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive.

Here are six tips for improving your cyber security today. Some you may already use, some are new.

Six Cyber Security Tips for Small Businesses

  1. Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible for an extra layer of security. Use a password app to keep track of your passwords.

  2. Keep Software Updated Regularly update your operating systems, software, and printer and firewalls to patch security vulnerabilities. Printers and firewalls can be done annually, but the rest should be checked monthly.

  3. Be Wary of Phishing Be cautious of suspicious emails, links, and attachments. Never share sensitive information unless you’re certain the request is legitimate.

  4. Secure Your Network Use a prosumer or commercial firewall and secure your Wi-Fi network with a good password. Consider a separate guest network.

  5. Back Up Your Data Regularly Back up your important data to an external drive and a cloud service. This ensures you can recover your information in case of a cyber incident.

  6. Educate Your Employees Train your employees to recognize and avoid cyber threats like phishing and malware. Make a game of “best phish attack of the week.”

Cyber security is a process, not a software package. Your best approach is gradual improvement every week.
